I was really torn about this book.
Positives: I enjoyed seeing the cousins learn to work together and appreciate each other. The ending was sweetly sentimental.
Negatives: The fact that the cousins learned to work together in the pursuit of deceit almost negated the benefits of them working together. The story spoils Santa, in a way that is not possible to bypass. There is foul language; not a lot, but more than my children hear in my home, and definitely more than I want to hear from them. There is inappropriate humor; I do not want to be explaining to my 9-year-old daughter why Grandpa thinks a limp noodle is a good joke topic. I read a lot of comments about how funny it was, but I saw very little humor in it. Instead, I found it painful to observe the kids pay their parents back by avoiding all things Christmas. It was an understandable reaction and probably realistic, but not funny.
I also thought the punishment was far too harsh for the crime. I agree the kids were out of line, and I understood the crime and punishment before I bought the book, but reading the description and the fallout, I realize that I would have made very different choices. I would have insisted that the kids clean up and maybe do extra cleaning as punishment, but taking away gifts for Christmas punishes the parents, too, and would have put paid to Santa as part of Christmas. It is possible, based on what happened at the end, that the parents never intended to follow through, but that has it's own issues; using threats of punishment you don't mean is not a great way to get the kids to listen.
Final analysis: I'm not sorry I read it, but I'm glad I read it before I gave it to my daughter. She won't be getting it any time soon.

Stealing Christmas Matthew Sullivan 9780996302029 Books Reviews

A charming and hilarious Christmas story that took me right back to my youth. This is the kind of story that I grew up on and is sadly in short supply these days. Thankfully, Sullivan has tapped into his memories of friendship, the holiday spirit, and obsessing over the latest video game console (all things that I can deeply identify with!) to create a story that feels authentic and takes us back to a time when books and movies like this helped shape many of our childhoods.

I hope today's generation of kids find this book so they can grow up on the kind of stories that so many of us miss right now. If you know anyone who happens to remind you of Mitch and the gang, either now or once upon a time, pick this one up for them. It may not be a Playstation 4, but you'll definitely make their Christmas!
What can I say? I didn't intend on reading this book - I purchased it to give to one of my grandchildren to read. I thought I'd just take a peek. I began reading yesterday afternoon, and some last night. I got up early this morning and finished it! WONDERFUL BOOK!!!

The author's skill at writing is easy to read, easy to comprehend and the words just flow. I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Great for reading during the Christmas season!
A fun story about a lot more than stealing back Christmas. A group of cousins get in trouble on Thanksgiving day and lose their Christmas presents. The story really starts when the kids decide to steal back their presents. What they learn along the way turns out to be more valuable than presents.
I purchased this book on a whim to read my 2 grandson ages 8 and 10 each morning in December before their school bus arrived. I thought it would be a fun way to get ready for the holiday's and create a special memory for them. What a great surprise this book turned out to be! Matthew Sullivan is an amazing guy who captured the voice of so many family members; siblings, cousins, parents, friends and grandparents! My husband and I were laughing out loud at some of the grandparent story lines as we recognized ourselves over and over again- Our grandsons enjoyed every chapter- we finished on Christmas eve. I think they wish the kids would have received some sort of gift after all their efforts, but they understood what they did and why they did it which truly was the meaning of Christmas. This is a wonderful read for families and teachers of upper elementary and middles schoolers. It was a delight and will live long in my heart as a treasured holiday memory- can't wait to see it at the movies one day!! Thank you Matthew Sullivan...keep writing!!
I was looking for a cute, quick read that takes place in December and this book was all of that! It was really light-hearted and sweet. Because the characters were so young, the stakes for their problems were really low, which was refreshing.

As cute and entertaining as the story was, I had a problem with the way most of the characters were written. The way the writer made the main character, Mitch, speak along with his other cousins really bothered me. Especially Claire, she felt like a characterization of how a middle-aged person thinks a millennial would talk. She said things that people that age NEVER actually say in real life. She said things like "perf", "totes", "amazeballs", "adorbes", "SMH" instead of actually shaking her head. Ugh, it was soooooo annoying. While some characters didn't speak/act their age, some characters were written extremely age-appropriate (i.e. Josh, Connor, and Lauren). I also had to suspend A LOT of disbelief during the heist and "recon mission" of the story.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was its pacing. It didn't feel too long or short, so something interesting was always frequently happening. I also had an ending that I didn't expect which left me slightly frustrated, but also reminded me of a lesson I hear in many Christmas stories.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I just had to suspend my disbelief A LOT with certain plot points and with how certain characters , ahem--Claire, were written.
